TACKLING THE PROBLEMS CAUSED BY IMPROPER WASTE-WATER TREATMENT
The Philippines is one of the most affected countries in the world when it comes to water pollution. At the origin of this pollution is the lack of waste water treatment facilities.
Lead contaminated water is a key channel of lead poisoning, and this is why Ecoglobal Foundation’s advocacies include the treatment of water and the remediation of polluted sites. The water pollution in the Philippines is among the most harmful social and health concern, and is not limited to lead pollution, which is why Ecoglobal Foundation is developing Waste Water Treatment projects.
Industry’s unrestricted disposal of toxic materials and byproducts into the Philippine water supply plays a major role in the growing water crisis. In the Philippines alone, chemical pollution is quickly taking its toll on the countries limited supply of fresh water. A lethal cocktail of hazardous chemicals is being dumped into major water sources such as the Laguna Lake and the Pasig River on a daily basis. Data from the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) of the Philippines showed that out of the 127 freshwater bodies that they sampled, 47% percent were found to have good water quality. However, 40% of those samples were found to have only fair water quality, while 13% showed poor water quality.
Most alarming of all was a statement from then Environment Secretary Angelo Reyes saying that as many as 50 of the 421 rivers in the Philippines are already considered “biologically dead.” Biologically dead rivers no longer contain any oxygen and cannot support any but the hardiest kinds of species. If this dangerous and toxic practice continues, a bleak, waterless landscape may not be far from our country’s future.
SUSTAINABLE WASTE-WATER TREATMENT
The Waste-Water Treatment technology implemented by Ecoglobal Foundation has been developed by the French company Phytorem – The Bamboo Eco Waste-Water Treatment (Bambou-Assainissement®). This is an environmental-friendly technology based on plants ability to absorb waste and toxins. The facility doesn’t use chemicals, emit smell or noise. In addition, the operation &maintenance costs are reduced to the minimum. '
BAMBOO – A NATURAL CLEANER
The Bambou-Assainissement® technique relies on the natural properties of bamboo and more particularly on the density of its roots and their high capacity to fix bacteria. These bacteria are able to remove polluting elements.
These properties are associated with an exceptionally high growth rate which makes the plant a very effective treatment element, naturally expandable with unlimited lifetime.
Effluents to be treated are conveyed, after preliminary treatment, to the bamboo plantation through a collection system or a specific transport/delivery system. Effluents infiltrate naturally into the roots so the polluting elements can be removed by microorganisms (naturally present) while nourishing the plants and ensuring their growth. This guarantees the production and yield of biomass (produced by the bamboo plantation).
This technology is monitored by various French Water Agencies in the framework of treatment solutions for loaded waste-water. It permits treating waste-water and contaminated soils. It takes into account the nature of pollutants (composition, density, amount, etc.), soils (acidity, permeability, porosity, etc.) but also the climate and the nature of the site where the installation is located. These elements are very important and will determine the choice of bamboo varieties and bacterial species to be activated for a guaranteed result.
The PHYTOREM® eco Waste-Water Treatment plants do not produce any sediment, residual waste or odor, and can adapt to all geographical areas (urban, suburban, rural, etc.), to all latitudes and to all climates. Once fully grown, the bamboo can be harvested and sold.
Ecoglobal Inc. is the only company in the Philippines that provides secondary containers for Used Lead Acid Batteries(ULABs) to prevent leakage of lead contaminated sulfuric acid into the soil, putting at risk the community and the environment.
Proper storage is crucial to prevent:
- Spillage of the acid battery electrolyte (health and environmental threat)
- Lead poisoning (health hazards)
- Lead pollution (contamination of the environment)
Proper storage and transportation isare crucial to avoid lead poisoning and lead pollution.
Ecoglobal Foundation works hand-in-hand with Ecoglobal Inc. (to date the one and only battery recycler in the Philippines accredited by the International Lead Association) to store, transport and dispose of ULABs in the most environmentally friendly way. Every transportated load of ULAB by Ecoglobal Inc. is registered by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) .
The Ecogobal Foundation conducts lead in blood testing to monitor the health of communities living close to Used Lead Acid Battery(ULAB) informal sector recyclers (junk shops, slums…) or former battery recycling plants, which have been closed down due to environmental and health issues.
Counselling and Treatment
In conjunction with the Medical Profession, the Ecoglobal Foundation provides funds to counsel those citizens, children and adults, with elevated levels of lead in blood on the most appropriate course of action or treatment, depending on the level of exposure, required to reduce the lead burden from their bodies.
Level of contamination and appropriate treatments: The treatments are prescribed and monitored by Dr. Galvez Tan
- Low Contamination – Change of alimentation
- Medium Contamination – Herbal remedies
- High Contamination – Chelation therapy
To prevent the soil from being contaminated by heavy metals such as lead, the Ecoglobal Foundation, in partnership with the leading European companies of Waste Water Treatment and Ecoglobal Inc. builds Bamboo Waste Water Treatment plants. The heavy metals passing through the Bamboo Waste Water Treatment will be captured in the roots of the bamboo. Eventually the bamboo roots containing lead will be disposed and treated in Ecoglobal Inc.’s recycling premises.
Actual Soil Remediation
In the event that soil contamination with lead is so high that the soil has to be removed, the Ecoglobal Foundation, in partnership with the most environmentally conscious NGOs, will conduct soil remediation by in-capsuling the contaminated soil and burying it on site prior to covering it with pure lead free topsoil. In certain case it is also possible that the lead contaminated soil can also undergo treatment to remove lead content.
Ecoglobal Foundation conducts awareness campaigns in informal sector communities, however expect the informal sector to take responsibility for the harmful and adverse impacts of their recycling activities that cause population lead poisoning and pollution. The informal sector breaks the Used Lead Acid Battery (ULAB) manually with a mix of hammers, machetes and axes without any Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), letting all the acid battery electrolyte leak into the soil with the subsequent risk of ground water contamination and thereby, putting at risk the community and the environment.
Ecoglobal Inc. (the one and only ULAB recycler in the Philippines accredited by the International Lead Association (ILA)) whole ULAB complete with the battery electrolyte and has never purchased lead waste, such as battery plates from broken ULAB, from the informal sector. Any battery recyclers that are buying battery plates, lead powder or lead connectors from the informal sector are party to building up a legacy of environmental contamination and population exposure.
It is everyones responsibility to use everything in their power to stop so-called battery recyclers from buying lead scrap materials from the informal sector!
How to help!
Individuals can bring their Used Lead Acid Batteries (ULAB) to the Ecoglobal Inc. recycling plant.
